Our 5th visit, so that must say something. Ideal for a hoist user. Good to be close to London, but you do need a car.

South East - Deal, Kent

Seastar Cottage

Seastar Accessible Holiday Cottage with ceiling hoist,Deal, KentSeastar is a large, beautifully adapted, family run holiday home on the seafront at Deal in Kent.  It sleeps 8 in 5 comfortable bedrooms.  The house is arranged to make the most of the incredible sea views with four bedrooms on the ground floor and living accommodation upstairs. We strive to provide a high quality of accommodation whilst also ensuring excellent facilities for our mobility impaired guests; allowing everyone to really enjoy a break.  Seastar has been created from first hand knowledge of living with disability and we understand it just has to be right.  Our facilities include; profiling beds, ceiling hoist, through floor lift, wet room, shower / commode chair and more.  We can easily accommodate extended family or carers and in our first season the feedback has been excellent with many immediate repeat bookings.

Accessible bedroom with ceiling hoistDeal itself is a quiet seafront town with over three miles of level promenade and the only pleasure pier remaining in Kent.  In January 2014 it won The Telegraph’s High Street of the Year award and in March 2014 was named by The Times as one of the ‘Top 30 weekend retreats’.  It is a little known gem with its quirky shops, conservation area, free Sunday concerts at the bandstand, free paddling pool and beautiful coastline.  Beyond Deal, within a 10 mile radius of Seastar, you can visit three castles and three championship links golf courses, the beautiful medieval town of Sandwich and a little further afield the historic city of Canterbury. It is also a fabulous base for a day trip to France and exploring the garden of England and its many attractions.

Why is there no shower commode chair available as it is not possible to get a person that is unable to stand or walk on to the Clos O Mat toilet. The old one you do have does not have a bucket and only has a 16 inch width seat which is not wide enough for the average wheelchair user.We were unable to make a booking this because of this.

Please see our Woodlands accessibility guide on the Visit England & Scotland Accessibility Guides website.

South West - Devon - Dawlish

A Place for Everybody - Dawlish, DevonA Place for Everybody

The bungalow is within walking distance of Dawlish and has spectacular, uninterrupted sea views. These can be enjoyed from the lounge/conservatory, or from the large paved terrace. One of the spacious bedrooms has an en-suite shower room, and there is an easily accessible ‘wheel in’ wet room which serves the rest of the property. The bungalow has level access to all areas, and there are various items of mobility equipment for use (please ask them for details).

The bungalow is set back on the Exeter Road between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren. There is ample parking for two large vehicles, and additional parking in the public lay-by just yards away. The property has a reasonably sized porch, large enough for a wheelchair, and hanging space for coats. The porch opens onto a spacious hallway via a sliding door, which leads to the rest of the bungalow. The first bedroom on your left has bunk beds, with two full size single mattresses. Opposite is a twin room which contains the hospital bed and the ceiling-track hoist. The spacious wet room has non-slip flooring. The hallway then narrows and a further en-suite double bedroom leads off. The kitchen is also accessed from this hallway, and eventually the hallway opens into a large lounge/conservatory. These two rooms can be either opened up as one room or closed off in the winter, when you might want to have a cosy night around the log burning stove; you may even wish to use the lounge as a 4th bedroom. There is comfortable seating for up to 8 guests, and further dining facilities also for 8. There is a large terrace with panoramic views, and various items of garden furniture for use by guests.

Reviews for Gwel an Mor

Name: Louise
Date of visit: 06/18

This is a lovely place to stay. Very clean and all the staff couldn’t be more helpful if there is anything you need. Very good disabled accommodation, good size bedroom, massive wetroom and good size doorways. There is level access to and from the accommodation and over the whole site. Hoist is an H frame which runs from bedroom in to the bathroom which made it incredibly easy to use. We only found one problem, which was the full profile bed was a divan style. The problem was very quickly resolved by the staff. They had some blocks specifically to help raise the bed off the floor, so you could get close enough to the bed for dressing, turning, manual handling, the person requiring it. All in all we had a fantastic time and would 100% recommend Gwel an Mor.

AHA31

No 31 - Christchurch, DorsetNumber 31 is a self-catering wheelchair accessible bungalow in Christchurch, Dorset.

We cater for up to 6 people in 2 bedrooms each with 2 single beds and a bed settee in the lounge. One bedroom has an overhead ceiling hoist running from one side of the room to the other and over both single beds. One of the beds is an adjustamatic profiling bed. There is also a smart TV in front of the profiling bed.

The bathroom also has a ceiling hoist that goes from the clos o mat toilet (wash and blow dry) and into the wheel in shower area. There is a drop down seat attached to the wall plus an attendant propelled shower chair that will go over the loo as well as into the shower area.

The kitchen is low level wheelchair accessible, so non wheelchair users people will need to use a chair to wash up!

We have a conservatory overlooking a large patio area. The rest of the garden is grass with borders of shrubs and trees. The conservatory has a separate cloakroom/utility room, with 2nd toilet, basin, washing machine and domestic items.

The lounge diner has 2 comfortable sofas, leaving plenty of room for a couple of wheelchair users. There is a TV (Freeview), DVD and video player plus a small hi fi system.

As you can see from the photograph there is plenty of room for 2 vehicles on the driveway.

Because we have so much equipment we tend to fill the summer weeks up very quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment.

The bungalow is approximately 1 mile from the town centre and Christchurch Quay where you can enjoy the accessible WheelyBoat. It is just 6 miles away from Bournemouth and 10 from Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast are just an hour away by car.

Wales - Pembrokeshire

Hampton Court Holiday Park, Pembrokeshire

Hampton Court Holiday Park accessible cabin with ceiling track hoistHampton Court Holiday Park is a small friendly family run holiday park set in the heart of the beautiful area of Pembrokeshire and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in West Wales.

The Park itself is about six miles from the harbour town of Saundersfoot and about 3 miles from the market town of Narberth whilst the Pembrokeshire county town of Haverfordwest is thirteen miles. So we are conveniently located to explore the area and take in the various views whether you wish to do so by wheelchair on one of the ever increasing accessible footways or simply enjoying some fish and chips in your car on the harbour front at Saundersfoot whilst watching the boats come in with the tide.

Hampton Court Holiday Park - bedroom with ceiling track hoistThe park is owned and run by us the Russ family. We live on the park with our children one of whom is profoundly disabled and a wheelchair user and it is this reason we decided to start catering for the disabled holiday market. We realised that as our son gets older and bigger it has become very difficult if not impossible to find truly accessible accommodation to go on holiday in and most importantly that there do not appear to be many places offering the facilities my family and I need in a “normal and inclusive setting”.

We decided we were in a unique position to try and do something about this and so designed the log cabin we are currently offering for hire as a holiday destination on a holiday park with other holiday makers but in accommodation built (not adapted) for the wheelchair user. We have equipped the cabin with a variety of things that we think will be of use to a lot of wheelchair users particularly those who require carer assisted hoisting.

Reviews of Clober Farm

Elizabeth “I used Clober Farm for an overnight stay when travelling down from Dundee to a Rugby match at Scotstoun. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and my only regret was not booking a few more days so as to really enjoy the house! It’s so reasonably priced compared to a hotel or B&B, and you know exactly what you’re getting; there’s no worry about which definition of ’accessible’ has been used when describing the facilities, everything has been thought about with contemporary, independent living at its core.”

Scotland - Roxburghshire - Melrose

Eildon Holiday Cottages

Eildon Holiday CottagesEildon Holiday Cottages are located at the foot of the majestic Eildon Hills in Melrose with stunning views over the Tweed valley and the beautiful Scottish Borders Countryside. As well as the inspiring Scottish landscapes the Scottish Borders has so much to offer visitors to the region including a long list of castles and historic buildings and an interesting mix of events going on such as the Melrose rugby 7s and the Borders Book Festival. Melrose is located approximately 35 miles south of Edinburgh and there is a direct train line in to the city centre which takes just under an hour and is wheelchair accessible.

Our six holiday cottages, ranging from one to three bedrooms, were originally designed from the realisation that it was impossible for families with disabled and severely disabled members to find any suitable self-catering holiday accommodation with facilities for all the family to take a holiday together. The strength of the complex is that able-bodied and disabled visitors can holiday together without differentiation. Disabled people can holiday alone (independent wheelchair user), with family, or with professional carers living in the cottage to provide the necessary support.

Our wheelchair accessible cottages are graded Category 1 – the best possible Tourist Board grading for wheelchair accessibility.

Two Cottages have optional ceiling tracking hoists - Langrig has a Spectra hoist and Single Tree Cottage has a Freeway hoist. Portable hoists are also available and can be used in all of the holiday cottages.

All have at least one bedroom on the ground floor level, with either a bathroom or wet-room shower room. There are grab rails in bath and shower rooms and let-down rails beside WCs. There is ample space for side-loading to WCs.

Electric profiling beds, pressure relieving mattress systems, shower chairs and a range of other equipment is available for guests to use.

  August 2018

Scotland - Dumfries & Galloway - Annan

The Moat House

The Moat House - Annan is a 200 year old historic property in the Royal Burgh of Annan, in the little explored Scottish gem of Dumfries and Galloway. The property sleeps up to 12 people in five very large bedrooms, four of which are wheelchair accessible with one being on the ground floor. There is a platform lift connecting the two floors which has low level controls and is large enough for an electric wheelchair and one other person, with good turning space at the entrances, top and bottom. There are X-Y ceiling track hoists in two of the bedrooms (one bedroom with a profiling double and one with two profiling single beds) and another in one of the two wet rooms. The third wheelchair accessible bedroom can be used as a Super-king-size or twin room whilst the fourth can be configured as a single or twin. The fifth (unfortunately non wheelchair accessible) bedroom is accessed via 3 steps and contains a king-size double bed and a double sofa bed. It is capable of sleeping up to four people.

The two wet rooms are both large and allow toilet transfer from left and right. The downstairs bathroom has an adult sized rise and fall changing/shower bed and is open plan allowing easy access for the adult and child sized wheeled shower chairs available. The downstairs bathroom also has Closomat toilet. Both bathrooms have grab rails and low level sinks and emergency pull cord alarms. The upstairs bathroom also has a shower seat

The farmhouse style kitchen/dining room is very well equipped and large enough to hold a 14 place table with clear wheelchair access along one long and short side. The induction hob and low profile sink are on a rise and fall system so no excuses -everyone can cook and wash up! Although there is a dishwasher to help out here. There is plenty of accessible storage at low level in pull out cupboards and drawers, this in combination with the four conventional and microwave ovens/grills and large fridge freezer should make catering for a large group a relatively straightforward affair.

Restoring this property has been a family project but it has been a long, daunting and arduous task so unfortunately The Moat House's garden will not be available this year although the castle park is accessible just 50m away via the front access... but watch this space... the intention is that a fully accessible sensory garden, patio and BBQ area will be available for 2017.
